distance is key
“A person using a mobile phone 30–40 cm away from their body… will have a much lower exposure to radio-frequency fields than someone holding the handset against their head.”

It is no coincidence, that in their small-print, cellphone manufacturers warn that we should not use their devices in close proximity to our heads and they suggest to use the speaker function or a headset when making a call. If you own an iPhone and you want to verify this, simply navigate to the legal disclaimer on your phone's operating system as described below:
Settings > General > About > Legal > RF Exposure...

Besides the officially acknowledged thermal heating of the tissue caused by an operating cellphone held in close proximity, bare in mind that your brain is something like a bio-electric supercomputer with 80+ billion neurons constantly firing electric signals i.e. carrying moving electric charges. Unfortunately, magnetic and electromagnetic fields, like the ones emitted by our cellphones have the ability to influence and distort said moving electrical charges.
Moreover the brain is made of approximately 80% water and the water molecule is a dipole. This means that it has electromagnetic polarity and it will be affected (set in motion) by any electromagnetic field it is exposed to. Matter of fact, any biological cell has an electromagnetic field that can be influenced by an external electromagnetic field.
Additionally the near-field of a transmitting antenna seems to contain a high load of very incoherent and therefore potentially biologically toxic scalar waves that are emitted as a byproduct to the information carrying signals.
Also every electrical device measurably distorts the background field (space) in the immediate surroundings of the device.

It is impossible to exactly say what these distortions do, but it is very conceivable that they have unwanted effects.
Because the strength of an electromagnetic field decreases exponentially the further one moves away from the source, a little distance goes a long way.

IF NOTHING ELSE, PROTECT YOUR SLEEP
During sleep our bodies detox, repair and release stress (mental and physical).
Keeping your bedroom free of transmitting wireless devices is likely the most beneficial precaution you can take, besides generally keeping distance from them.
Our bodies are marvelous self-repairing systems that can cope with many disturbing external factors if give the chance to recover properly.
Making sure that the oxidative stressor that is electromagnetic radiation is inhibited during this precious time goes a long way.
That means having the cellphone and other wireless transmitters switched off, or in airplane mode and away from the body and turning off the wifi during the night. If wifi signals can't be avoided, one can consider using shielding paint for the bedroom walls.

don't use regular headsets
Every loudspeaker unit works with a built-in permanent magnet. The magnets used are typically Neodymium magnets (or others of similar strength). These are the strongest commercially available magnets that exist.
A Neodymium magnet of the size used in headphone speakers can easily produce a magnetic field (B) exceeding a field strength of 2000 gauss (G).
If you want to know how strong that is, try holding one of these magnets close to your computer hard-drive, or an old floppy disk, or your credit card... ...You can almost certainly throw them away afterwards!
(We are not liable for any damages if you decide to test this!!!)
To put things into perspective consider that the earth's magnetic field has around 25 gauss at it's core and about 0,25 - 0,60 gauss at it's surface. Your brain has/produces a magnetic field of approximately 0,0000000001 gauss.
The magnetic field strength (B) and the unit gauss indicate how much force a magnetic field exerts on moving electric charges (Lorenz Force).
In regular wired headsets the speaker unit is located in the earpiece and therefore sits right in your ear in close proximity to your brain. So, when using a regular headset you expose your brain to a permanent artificial magnetic field of a decent strength.
Again, as mentioned above, bare in mind that your brain is something like a bio-electric supercomputer with 80+ billion neurons carrying electric signals. So what do we have there? ...Exactly, moving electric charges!
Moreover the brain is made of approximately 80% water and the water molecule is a dipole. This means that it has electromagnetic polarity and it will be affected by any magnetic field it is exposed to. You won't feel it, but it certainly does something. Your blood also has magnetic polarity. Matter of fact, any cell has an electromagnetic field with moving charges and a polarity.
Now, I'm not necessarily claiming that having two Neodymium magnets sitting in your ears and exposing your head to their permanent magnetic field is necessarily bad for you, just food for thought...
In addition to that, the wires of a regular headset are almost never properly insulated and can and will therefore act as a receiving antenna and collect electromagnetic signals from the environment. This phenomenon is called induction of faradic currents. A fair amount of this environmental electromagnetic radiation is then delivered to the region of your brain through the earpiece IN ADDITION to the electromagnetic waves that carry the information (typically your conversation or music) that are to be converted into sound by the speaker unit in your ear.
So again in short...
REGULAR WIRED HEADSETS INCREASE POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS
because:
-
The neodymium magnets in the speaker units produce a very strong permanent magnetic field right in your ears!
-
Electricity is converted to sound waves in the speakers sitting in your ears, causing electromagnetic fields to be present in close proximity to your brain exactly where there is no protective bone layer of the skull (ear channel)!
-
Induction and conduction of faradic currents through unshielded wires increase the electromagnetic radiation that is delivered to the speakers!

shortcomings of emf shielding
There are a wide range of commercial products available on the market that claim to shield, redirect, absorb, or harmonize harmful electromagnetic radiation.
Some of these products can indeed be considered useful (like shielding paint for walls and fabric for clothes), at least to a certain extent. Many however, are really just useless and potentially even harmful (like shielding cellphone cases).
The problem with shielding electromagnetic fields directly at the source (typically around the cellphone), is that the shielding inhibits the signal quality and causes the device's antenna unit to automatically transmit at a higher intensity to produce a more stable connection to the surrounding relay stations. That makes the near-field of the antenna even more toxic.
